Mama Spice turns 70 on Saturday. It seems like a good time to explain about the backbone of our business - the family.
Our grandparents emigrated from India in 1951 and settled in Glasgow. They arrived with my aunt and my mum, who was just a month old. My grandparents introduced themselves to the community by cooking Indian food. For my family, food isn’t just a meal - it’s a way to break down barriers.
Like most families, when my brother, sister and I were growing up, the kitchen was the busiest room in the house. We watched Mum, Dad and our grandparents prepare delicious Indian food for family and friends nearly everyday.
The aroma’s coming from that kitchen take me back to loud and busy family meals, where for at least a minute, we would all stop talking and take in the flavours we were tasting.
I frequently say that ‘Indian food is in our soul’ and it’s true. For us, Indian food symbolises family, friends and togetherness. It’s that passion that we put into our business and why we see our customers as an extension of our family.
I hope we can all be together soon to enjoy life, laughter and Indian food!
