This week I managed to take a little bit of time to myself. A friend told me about Mindfulness and how it can help your day to day routine as well as your outlook.
I read something quite interesting, which I wanted to share. Indian chef, Sharmini has written that cooking helps you be mindful, as it uses all 5 senses. She says ‘Be present in the moment to take in the sensory information of the food you are cooking’,
Seeing:
Looking at the colourful ingredients such as the vibrant colours of spices.
Touching:
The different textures of the ingredients.
Hearing:
Listening out for the crunch of the vegetables being chopped.
Smelling:
Carefully inhaling the different aroma’s coming from all the ingredients cooking together.
Tasting:
Appreciating the final result of the cooked dish.
I admit, I hadn’t really thought of cooking in these terms but just a simple deep breath and stopping for a few seconds to ‘take in the sensory information’ has really helped me feel calmer and in control.
The benefits to cooking really are endless and I’m looking forward to learning a lot more about Mindfulness!
